at Cornell
FAQ
The HeARTbeat at Cornell is a publication that ultimately strives to create an inclusive atmosphere for creatives interested in health. Below are a few things to note when deciding whether HeARTbeat is right for you.
General
What is our mission?
We are not a publication solely tied to medicine and the lived experience; we hope to express views on various discussions related to health, such as a biological, anthropologic, and even historical perspective through a creative lens. We aim to represent health and science as a whole along with the artistic ingenuity behind it. Our goal is to spark discussion about the interdisciplinary nature of health and society, and we hope to provide a place for the expression of various perspectives to lift underrepresented voices in science and health.
What do our publications entail?
Pieces will be published on our website once a year, and we will do some social media spotlights on Instagram throughout the year. Because we promote all different mediums, we believe that having a digital platform will be the best way to exhibit the creative projects.
What kind of creative mediums do you accept?
Get creative! We will showcase all types of pieces including poems, short stories, paintings, pottery, and whatever you can think of as long as they are original.
What should I avoid in my project?
While we aim to foster creativity in all its forms, our priority is to maintain an inclusive and welcoming environment that celebrates the work of all creatives. We kindly ask that you refrain from submitting AI-generated works. While AI can be used as a tool to inspire or support your creative process, the final piece should be an original work that reflects your personal vision.
In terms of subject matter, please refrain from incorporating graphic violence, unnecessary nudity, and discriminatory ideology in your work. Your submission will be reviewed by peers to ensure it aligns with these guidelines. If any of these elements are found in your project, you must discuss them with the E-board and your work may not be published.
Where can I get materials for my artwork?
You can reach out to HeARTbeat if you need assistance obtaining certain supplies. Otherwise, we will be happy to provide a variety of materials including, but not limited to: paint, brushes, markers, and sketchbook paper.
Committees
What are committees? And should I join one?
Committees are an excellent way to become more involved in the club and are essential to the way we function. Our committees will be implemented in the Spring of 2025. Consider joining one if you would like to work directly with E-board and contribute ideas to the structure and function of the club. There are three committees: art, editing, and outreach.
What does each committee do?
Art: Create themes for yearly publications (physical and/or digital), format publications, and edit layouts of publications and our website.
Editing: Proofread captions and written work, organize pieces into "sections" under each yearly theme.
Outreach: Organize recruitment, create a network of HeARTbeat partners, communicate between clubs and potential speakers for speaker events, and manage social media and website.
How do I join a committee?
Start by filling out the interest form, where you'll also indicate your interest in joining committees. Next, submit a piece to our publication to qualify for committee membership. In spring 2025, the Eboard will review committee applications and select members who have demonstrated both active involvement and passion!
